It's got as many Car and Driver 10Best awards as it does tires, but after seven years of one of our favorite crossovers, the CX-5 is due for a rejuvenation. It's still a better driver and far more luxurious than the train of competitors behind it, but the new kids on the block have quickly outshined its trophy cabinet. Under the hood is a 187-hp inline-four engine with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The optional 256-hp turbocharged is the powertrain to get, but thankfully Mazda has decided against the popular CVT, and instead uses a traditional six-speed automatic transmission, which sweetens the CX-5 driving experience. While it gives up some space for the sake of style, sitting in a CX-5 is enough to convince you of its luxury. For space, we'd stick with the newer Honda CR-V or the slightly larger CX-50, but despite its age, the CX-5 still drives like it's out to prove something. Where This Vehicle RanksWhat's New for 2024?Like it did for the CX-30 crossover and 3 sedan and hatchback, Mazda adds the Carbon Turbo trim level to the CX-5 for 2024. A CX-5 Carbon Turbo is easy to spot, as it wears brown Zircon Sand paint and black trim pieces including wheels and mirror caps. Carbon Turbo models come with the optional 256-hp turbocharged inline-four engine and all-wheel drive. With the upgraded 256-hp turbocharged engine, its quickness better corresponds with its athletic handling. Its exterior is elegantly sporty with trim-specific gloss-black accents. Its interior mirrors that sportiness with red accents and Transmission, and PerformanceThe CX-5's standard 187-hp four-cylinder engine has great throttle response when pulling away from stoplights or hustling around town, so it feels quicker than it actually is. It's at higher speeds, such as when trying to pass or merge onto the freeway, that it feels underpowered. The 256-hp turbocharged version we tested provided much quicker acceleration. Both engines pair with a snappy six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. You don't need to drive the CX-5 hard to enjoy it or to appreciate its excellence. Sure, its precise steering and composed cornering make for one helluva Sunday cruise. But it also soaks up rough roads without commotion and has the ride quality of crossovers that cost twice as much. This harmonious interplay of dynamics is unrivaled by its competitors. Pavement imperfections are isolated, road noise is minimal, and the damping is neither stiff nor floaty. At the same time, the Mazda comes alive on curvy roads. The electrically assisted steering provides satisfying responses. The Signature model we tested had a reassuring brake-pedal feel that operated without delay and without being too touchy when you apply the Economy and Real-World MPGWith two engine options, the CX-5 has two fuel-economy ratings. The base engine is rated at 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. The more powerful turbocharged engine is rated at 22 mpg city and 27 highway. We've tested both on our 75-mph highway route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen, and the standard engine returned 32 mpg compared with the turbo four's 30 mpg result. His goal is to help families and first-time shoppers find the right vehicle. Mazda has a reputation for making affordable cars and SUVs that deliver engaging performance and high-quality interiors. The 2023 CX-5 is no exception to this rule. It has arguably the best all-around performance in the compact SUV class and a cabin that is near-luxury in higher trims. Combine these positives with a robust list of standard safety and comfort features and it represents a great value, which is why we named it our 2023 Best Compact SUV for the enjoyed my week driving the 2023 CX-5 Signature, but there are two areas where it came up short. The CX-5’s infotainment system lacks a touch screen and is controlled with a rotary knob. This controller was frustrating and distracting to use throughout my week with the SUV, as apps like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are designed for touch controls. The cargo area is merely adequate and offers less room than most other compact SUVs, including the 2023 Honda CR-V, Ford Bronco Sport and Hyundai the 2023 Mazda CX-5 a Good SUV? Yes, the 2023 CX-5 is a great SUV. In fact, we named it our 2023 Best Compact SUV for the Money because it has the best combination of quality and value in its class. It boasts an upscale interior with comfy first- and second-row seats, lots of standard safety features and a healthy amount of cargo space. It's agile and comfortable to drive, and its two available four-cylinder engines enable peppy acceleration and decent fuel economy. Better still, the CX-5 is a surprisingly good value. Pricing starts at just under $27,000, and that includes all-wheel drive. Drawbacks are few, but it is worth mentioning that the infotainment system lacks touch-screen functionality. This can complicate some otherwise simple adjustments. Should I Buy the 2023 Mazda CX-5? The well-rounded CX-5 deserves to be a top pick if you're shopping for a small SUV. It simply looks and feels like a much pricier vehicle. That said, the compact SUV segment is jam-packed with compelling alternatives that might be a better fit for you, from the practical Toyota RAV4 and outdoorsy Subaru Forester to the all-new Kia Sportage and Mazda CX-50. Both SUVs are similarly sized and priced, they have premium interiors with many of the same tech and safety features, and they even offer the same engine choices. Ultimately, both are great options in this class, but there are some differences to note. The CX-50 offers a touch-screen infotainment system, which the CX-5 lacks, and a higher max towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. On the other hand, the CX-5 has a bit more cargo space and a slightly smoother ride. Compare the CX-5 and CX-50 » Mazda CX-5 vs. Honda CR-V The Honda CR-V is all-new for 2023, and it outshines the CX-5 in a few key areas. The CR-V gets superior fuel economy of up to 28/34 mpg city/highway, its interior provides significantly more cargo space, and its touch-screen infotainment system is a bit easier to use. On the other hand, the CR-V is much more expensive than the CX-5 starting at roughly $31,100, its engine tends to drone noisily during passing maneuvers, and it can only tow up to 1,500 pounds 500 less than the CX-5. The right pick for you will likely come down to price or preference. Compare the CX-5 and CR-V » Compare the CX-5, CX-50 and CR-V » CX-5 Interior Finer Things 2023 CX-5 Interior Quality The interior of the 2023 Mazda CX-5 punches well above its price point. It can even give some luxury compact SUVs a run for their money. The cabin has a sleek and sophisticated appearance, and most of the interior surfaces are wrapped with quality materials. Hard plastics are few and far between. Overall build quality is top-notch as well, and the interior does a great job of keeping road and wind noise at bay. 2023 CX-5 Infotainment, Bluetooth and Navigation Mazda equips every CX-5 with a infotainment display mounted high on the dashboard, which makes it easy to see while driving, and it largely impresses with crisp graphics and prompt responses. That said, it isn't a touch screen. It's controlled by a knob on the center console, as well as a smaller audio volume knob and a few buttons. The layout works fine for adjusting basic settings, but it's a cumbersome way to navigate through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. On the plus side, the climate controls are intuitive and conveniently placed in the center stack. Standard infotainment features a screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, two USB ports, HD Radio, a four-speaker stereo and a Wi-Fi hot spot Available infotainment features navigation, satellite radio, six- and 10-speaker stereos, wireless device charging and two additional USB ports Additional standard features an analog gauge cluster, remote keyless entry, push-button start and remote start Other available features a partially digital gauge cluster, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, ambient lighting and a moonroof For more information, read What Is Apple CarPlay? and What Is Android Auto? 2023 CX-5 Cargo Space The CX-5 has cubic feet of cargo space behind its rear seats and cubic feet with these seats folded. That's a fairly small cargo capacity by compact SUV standards, especially next to spacious rivals like the Subaru Forester and Hyundai Tucson. Even so, there's plenty of room for stowing large and small items alike. A manual liftgate comes standard; a power liftgate is available. How Many People Does the 2023 CX-5 Seat? The CX-5 is a two-row SUV with five seats. Cloth upholstery and manually adjustable front seats are standard. Available upgrades include leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats with power adjustments, heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel. The CX-5's front seats are supportive and nicely contoured, and there's ample headroom and legroom for taller occupants to stretch out. The range of seat and steering wheel adjustments makes it easy to find a comfortable driving position. Outward visibility is great to the front and sides of the SUV, but the rear sightlines are rather slim. The rear seats have sufficient room for adults to sit comfortably on short trips, but on longer outings the second row is best reserved for kids or teens. 2023 CX-5 and Child Car Seats The CX-5 has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system the second-highest rating of Acceptable for its ease of use. Though the setup is mostly user-friendly, the lower anchors are set too deeply in the seats. Read more about interior » CX-5 Performance Enjoy the Drive 2023 CX-5 Engine The 2023 Mazda CX-5 features a 187-horsepower four-cylinder engine, a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. A turbocharged version of this engine is available, and it produces up to 256 horsepower on premium gasoline and 227 horsepower on regular gas. The standard engine is perfectly fine for everyday driving. It hustles the CX-5 off the line and around town with respectable verve, and this muscle is maximized by the prompt-yet-smooth shifts of the six-speed automatic. That said, the engine starts to feel out of breath when passing other vehicles on the highway. Zero to 60 mph takes about seconds. The turbocharged engine largely fixes that issue. It's noticeably punchier, both in town and on the highway, and its deeper well of torque makes for snappy passing maneuvers. It also trims the zero-to-60 sprint to just seconds. 2023 CX-5 Gas Mileage The 2023 CX-5 gets an EPA-estimated 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, which is average fuel economy for a compact SUV. Models equipped with the turbo engine are rated at 22/27 mpg city/highway. Thriftier alternatives include the Nissan Rogue and Toyota RAV4. 2023 CX-5 Ride and Handling The CX-5 feels like a much pricier SUV from behind the wheel. Its taut suspension does a nice job of soaking up bumps and dips in the road, resulting in a firm but comfortable ride, and it keeps body lean to a minimum around turns. The steering is quick and nicely weighted, and the brakes slow the SUV confidently. Overall, the CX-5 exhibits a great blend of comfort and sportiness, and it remains one of the best-driving SUVs in this class. 2023 CX-5 Towing Capacity The CX-5 can tow up to 2,000 pounds when properly equipped. That's an average tow rating for the segment. Read more about performance » CX-5 Reliability Is the 2023 Mazda CX-5 Reliable? The 2023 Mazda CX-5 has a predicted reliability score of 82 out of 100. Generally speaking, each trim adds a few more features than the last. The other main difference is engine performance. All of the S trims feature a 187-horsepower engine, while the Turbo trims have a punchier 256-horsepower engine. All-wheel drive is standard across the lineup. Mazda CX-5 S The entry-level CX-5 S has a $26,700 starting price. RYAN ZUMMALLEN Like a lot of you, I have a ton to do today. Later on I'm going to leave work, pick up the kiddo, load up all of our camping gear, and then take the family out to our favorite spot where we might do some off roading before we set up. So, what's the best car for handling all that action? Here at Edmunds, we think it's a compact SUV. They have enough size for trips, enough comfort for passengers, and good fuel economy for longer drives. If you're thinking about one but don't know where to start it's our top 10 best compact SUV rankings. At Edmunds, we have rankings for every car, truck, and SUVs. And go to to get a cash offer on the vehicle in your driveway right now. So, what goes into the Edmunds rankings? First, our test team puts each vehicle through a rigorous workout. They log their capabilities, spaciousness, and efficiency. Then we score them in dozens of categories, add up all the points, and voila. A top 10 ranking. Up first is the Ford Bronco Sport, also known by its other name the 2021- no, not the big Bronco. Think a little smaller, not as tough. Yeah, that one. The Bronco Sport is a compact and boxy SUV with some impressive capability under its belt that makes it great for carving dirt trails or splashing through some mud. Unfortunately, competitors are more comfortable and more spacious. And both its steering and braking just aren't up to par. It's the equivalent of casting big budget stars in your movie and then totally botching the plot. We still like the punchy 2 liter turbo, and there's plenty of personality on board. Just don't expect the real Bronco sized experience. Next, we have the Ford Escape I know what you're thinking they still make the Ford Escape. First of all, yes they do. Rude. And second of all, even though the Bronco Sport and Escape are built on the same platform, the Escape is more refined. Unlike the Bronco Sport, the Escape is comfortable on the road and pretty deft at handling curves. The interior is also nicer place to be because of easy to use controls and plenty of space for passengers, even in the back where the Bronco Sport trips up. Listen, we really don't have many complaints about the Escape other than it's just not that exciting. It's the Almond Joy of SUVs. No one gets mad at it but it's just Almond Joy. How many people do with a Toyota RAV4? Exactly. This has been one of the most popular vehicles, not just SUVs, vehicles in the country for many years. When this version came out in 2019, we drove it across the country and didn't find many weak spots. The RAV4 is a well rounded SUV that you can find for an attractive price. And it isn't going to give you headaches when it comes to space, comfort, or efficiency. Speaking of efficiency, we think the RAV4 Hybrid is actually a better buy if you can swing it. But on the standard RAV4, Toyota even sprinkles a little bit of extra capability with up to inches of ground clearance. Not too shabby for the class at all. Look, it may not be exceptional at any one thing. But for most people, that's OK. Plus, it looks really good when it's dirty. Matter of fact, I should take one of my camping trip right now. Speaking of being exceptional at one thing, let's talk about the Jeep Wrangler shall we? Coming in at number 7 on our list, the Wrangler is one of the most recognizable vehicles you can buy today. Every part, every bolt, every measurement is tailored specifically for off roading. You can climb up hills, you can crunch over obstacles, and you can definitely rock crawl in a Wrangler. And I can't say that about any other SUV on this list. What makes it so capable? Simple, it gives 0 [BEEP] about ride comfort, steering feel, or wind noise. But I'm going to let you in on a little secret. It actually does care about fuel economy. You can get a 2 liter Wrangler, a diesel Wrangler, and even a plug-in hybrid Wrangler. What a time to be alive, right? OK. Now we're starting to put it all together. The Jeep Cherokee, our number six pick, is a smart crossover SUV. Why smart? Because on one hand it's rugged and has pretty serious off road chops. While on the other hand, it also feels good to drive on the road and is sophisticated enough for a night out. First of all, it's a Jeep so you know it can hit a trail no problem. If you get the Trailhawk trim, it's a legit off roader. But for most of you, the important stuff is this comfortable interior, a responsive feeling behind the wheel, and a good combination of technology and upscale materials. This is a crossover with a little attitude. People are constantly asking me for car buying advice. But then they don't always take it. That's a shame because I give great advice. Anyhoo, one of the cars that actually does make their ears perk up is the Subaru Forester. You can always tell when someone is a Forester person from a mile away. They like being different from the norm. They don't mind getting a little dirty. They have anywhere from 1 to 17 dogs. You know, Subaru stuff. The Forester comes with standard all wheel drive. But the thing that a lot of people don't know is the advanced safety system called eyesight is one of the best that we've tested. All my friends with Foresters love them. And I know this for a fact because Subaru owners are contractually obligated to talk your ear off about their Subaru. The redesigned 2022 Hyundai Tucson looks like it could get the kids to school in the morning and great a 100 pound block of parmesan at night. I mean there is a lot going on with this design. But once you open the doors, you'll see why this new SUV has shot to the top of our rankings. The Tucson is extremely well appointed with excellent seats, soft materials all over the place, and an a-plus smooth ride on the road. We like it. We just don't like its engine very much. It took more than 10 seconds for this four cylinder to get the Tucson from 0 to 60 miles an hour. Yikes. But, I have a solution for that. Its hybrid version. It's the quickest hybrid SUV in the class and keeps all of the comfort of the gas version just obviously with better fuel economy. Just keep it away from your cheese. Next up is the Nissan Rogue, which you might be surprised to see here. After all, the Rogue hasn't been one of our highest rated compact SUVs in the past. But something crazy must have happened over at Nissan HQ because we were left impressed with this redesigned 2021 model. It's got a blocky new design, it's actually pretty fun to drive, and the interior on top trim levels is surprisingly plush. The biggest thing however, is that it's supremely easy to use. Nissan designed the Rogue to be your helpful pal and it fills that role nicely. There are all kinds of spacious areas to store your stuff. And the rear cargo area is among the largest in the class. Even better, the divide and hide cargo management system can be configured to keep items in place or create maximum storage space or hide your stuff from outsiders. Nifty thinking, Nissan. Earlier I told you that people only really take my car advice on two vehicles, the Subaru Forester and this one. The Mazda CX-5. Why I mean just look at it when have you ever seen a compact SUV that made you stop and say, dang. It looks sleek, it looks sporty, it looks- I hate this word- but it looks dynamic. And it drives exactly how it looks. CX-5 is really sharp on the road. I mean it's a Mazda, it's what they do. But beyond that the five also has a gorgeous interior. Even on bass levels the styling is just first class. And its highest trim called the signature is legit luxurious. I like it so much I have a 2020 CX-5 at home. Turns out I give pretty good advice. People should listen to me more. Finally, we're up to number one on our list. And if you've ever attended a PTA meeting, this will come as no surprise. It's the Honda CRV. The CRV is a smart choice. Sure, it has powerful engines, quiet ride, and nice seats. And there's great cargo capacity. I mean like exceptional cargo capacity. But most of all, the CRV just doesn't really have weaknesses. It can be the smooth daily commuter, it can be the mountain bike hauler, it can be the winter ski vehicle with an all wheel drive system that pulls you out of the snow when you accidentally drive into a drift. Don't ask me how I know. Most of all, the CRV nails the basics. And adds a lot of value into every trim level on top of that. You may have to pay a little more than some rivals for the privilege. but in our estimation, the CRV experience is worth it. Hey, that was fun. Compact SUV can be fun. You know, these aren't the most exciting vehicles on the road. But with a little imagination there's all kinds of things you can do with them. Whether you decide to go with an Escape or a CX-5 or anything else on this list, it can all carry lots of stuff and keep you and your passengers comfortable on the road for a long time. So if you really want a compact SUV that makes you happy, you should do one thing. Go outside and enjoy it. Don't forget to hit like and subscribe so you'll be the first to see Edmunds videos when they come out. And if you're in the market to sell your car, go to to get a cash offer on the vehicle in your driveway right now. [MUSIC PLAYING]

Why would you buy a CX-50 over a CX-5, or vice-versa? We examine pros and cons on tiny zero changes everything with Mazda SUVs. The new-for-2023 CX-50 may seem like nothing more than a CX-5 with an off-road-ready look, but there's more to it than that. These SUVs clearly share a family look, but spend as much time as we have with each Mazda, and you start to understand their differences, as well as the pros and cons of each. So if you're curious why you'd get a CX-50 instead of a CX-5 or vice-versa, read on and check out photos you won't find anywhere Lower, and WiderWe normally associate "longer, lower, and wider" as attributes of sleek sports cars, not SUVs trying to project an outdoorsy appeal. Even so, that's how the new 2023 Mazda CX-50 distinguishes itself from the CX-5. Honestly, you can't go wrong with either SUV in terms of design; Mazda has been building attractive vehicles for years. When you walk around both, you'll notice the CX-50 appears to have a longer hood, and it also boasts a few chunkier styling elements like the exaggerated fender flares in a contrasting color, fake vents in the rear to emphasize its width, and black trim around the grille. 2023 Mazda CX-50 2022 Mazda CX-5 Length in. in. See them both in person and decide for They DriveJust because these SUVs are similarly sized and priced doesn't mean they're identical to drive. The two SUVs share engines and a promise to be among the sportier players in their competitive set, but they ride on different platforms. Although each boasts communicative steering, the CX-5's feels heavier—not something most of us want every time we turn the 187-hp engine powers the standard version of both Mazda SUVs while a 227-hp turbocharged model is offered, too—and if you fill it with 93-octane fuel, horsepower jumps to 256. MotorTrend-tested 0-60-mph times for both turbocharged SUVs have disappointed at the track; a 2022 CX-5 reached the benchmark speed in seconds, and the 2023 CX-50 hit it in seconds. Yes, this is quicker than the base-engine models can achieve, but we'd still like more oomph for the extra-cost variants. At least they sound good at wide-open said that, the CX-5 and CX-50 largely deliver on being more fun to drive than the average Advantage Mazda CX-50PricingIf you're looking for a reason to get one over the other, pricing won't be it. As this is written, the 2023 Mazda CX-50's pricing is remarkably close to that of the 2022 CX-5. Like Subaru, Mazda now includes AWD as standard on every SUV. The 2023 CX-50 S base trim model carries an MSRP of $28,025. The 2022 CX-5 S is only $550 cheaper, and that gap may close for the 2023 model the CX-50, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can be wirelessly activated, but it's cord-only on the CX-5. After thousands of miles using the phone-mirroring feature on the large and standard screen, we've come to really appreciate the wireless if you want a power liftgate? In that case, the price difference shrinks to 10 bucks when comparing the 2023 CX-50 to the 2022 CX-5. Perhaps because the CX-5 has been around longer, you get more features with that S Preferred trim besides a power liftgate. The 2022 CX-5 also adds leather seats and a power moonroof. The 2023 CX-50 uses Mazda's first panoramic dual-panel moonroof, but that gets added on the next trim up, the S Preferred Plus. If you're looking for the turbocharged models, the 2023 CX-50 starts at $37,625 and the 2022 CX-5 costs $350 Tie. Keep in mind that regional variations of supply and demand may change the prices near and Passenger SpaceMazdas aren't known for being the most capacious cars around, and these SUVs don't change that. The CX-5 offers up to cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, which is a tad lower than the CX-50's cubic feet. If you're hauling more than the cargo area can handle, the CX-50 can tow up to 3,500 pounds with the turbocharged engine—1,500 pounds more than the CX-5 has more passenger space inside, but neither feels cramped. Both SUVs have reasonably spacious rear seats that won't give the Honda CR-V a run for its money; thanks to those wide-opening rear doors, though, entry and exit are easier. We'd also note that the CX-5 feels like it has a slightly more commanding view of the road Honda CR-V and Subaru OutbackLuxury-Like Appeal? Yes and NoMazda's premium aspirations come through loud and clear in the most loaded trims of the CX-5 and CX-50. One of our favorite features in the CX-5 is the cushy leather-like legrests on either side of the center console. It's an incredibly underrated feature longer-legged folks may use every time they're stopped in CX-50 lacks that detail but does offer a new terracotta brown/orange seat color with black contrasting trim. It's not the traditional saddle brown color we see on some luxury cars, but it still works. On the CX-50 we have for a year, we paired that with a set of four $150 premium black floormats with a silver "CX-50" plate for the front row and contrasting trim to match the rest of the interior. On the CX-5 Turbo Signature, we found that model's Caturra Brown Nappa leather seats to look plenty premium, but they were so dark you might not initially notice they were both SUVs could use an update to justify a $40,000-plus price tag on loaded models is their instrument clusters. Both have a partial digital instrument cluster with limited functionality that pales next to the best designs in the business. However, both SUVs do something better than many other cars and SUVs do at any price—they break up the dashboard design in an almost relaxing way. There's tons of space between the central air vents and the next set of controls in both the CX-5 and CX-50. It's a cleaner Mazda CX-50CX-50 vs. CX-5 Which One Should I Get?We're amazed at how well Mazda has kept the CX-5 relevant after so many years without a full redesign. And it still looks great. We appreciate the CX-50, too, and see subtle ways Mazda learned from the CX-5, especially in the cabin. The HVAC controls are easier to use, and the higher-end models offer more features. The CX-50, however, is an acquired taste. Mazda successfully applied the same design language to a spirit that's more trail-ready than boulevard-cruiser. That's not for everyone, and we'd recommend a closer look at these photos and in person to see how these SUVs come alive in different May Also Like
